Located in the southwestern corner of Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore appellation contains 90% of Michigan’s vineyards. With commercial vineyards for this area dating back as far as 1867, it’s also a historical cradle of Michigan wine. Since this region produces most of America’s grapes for juice and jelly production, you’ll find most vineyards are planted with varieties such as Concord and Niagara. Because of this, there is only a small percentage of acreage with wine grape in the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Country. More common varieties are quickly being planted to enhance the region’s portfolio.
Lake Michigan Shore Wine Country is located in close driving distance to the metropolitan areas of Chicago & Detroit. This makes Lake Michigan Shore Wine Country a perfect destination for a wine weekend or trip. Lake Michigan Shore Wine Country starts near the Michigan/Indiana border and follows close along the Lake Michigan shoreline to just south of South Haven and Saugatuck.
