Old Mission Peninsula Wine Country
The newest Michigan wine region is Old Mission Peninsula. Located just north of Traverse City between the east and west “arms” of Grand Traverse Bay, this narrow land mass became an approved wine-growing region in 1987. Old Mission Peninsula is only 19 miles long and 3 miles wide. Old Mission Peninsula never leaves vineyards far away from the deep, cooling waters of Grand Traverse Bay. Although Old Mission Peninsula experiences a short 145-day growing season, the suitable vine choices include clones of Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris for whites. The reds include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Merlots.
